My Top Ten Films of the Year

Jack Kleinman’s Top Ten

My Picks for the Academy Awards

My Favorite Critic Andrew Sarris Top Ten List

Friends,

It’s Oscar ® time!  Another year in movies and it is time for me to announce my ten best of 2010 as well as my predictions. As always, I wait until this time to allow me to catch some of the late releases and be sure that I haven’t missed a film I wanted to add to the list. This past year I saw 31 films released in 2010; only 12 of them in the movie theatre. I have selected the following 10 as my best of the year.

Steve Reinhardt’s “Top Ten” for 2010

1.        The Social Network

2.        Toy Story 3

3.        The Kids Are All Right

4.        True Grit

5.        Another Year

6.       The King's Speech

7.        Fair Game

8.        Rabbit Hole

9.        Howl

10.   Hereafter

Honorable Mention for two “Made of TV” films of distinction:

Temple Grandin

You Don’t Know Jack

It was very hard for me to make my “Ten Best” picks this year.  First, most of the quality films only arrived in the Oscar season (late Fall to Christmas) and made for too much to see in a short time. Second, it just didn’t seem to be a very good year for films in general, as there was nothing that I wanted to tell everyone: “You’ve got to see this film!”

“The Social Network” was extremely well written and paced, as were “True Grit” and “The Kids Are All Right”. And “Toy Story 3” had an emotional component that made you wonder why “real’ actors cannot show as much emotion as their computer generated friends. But for most of the year, the movies were a disappointment to me.  I did enjoy the performance of Colin Firth and he should get his acting award this year for the “King’s Speech” (the one he deserved in “A Single Man”) and the performance of newcomer Hailee Steinfeld in “True Grit” was exceptional.

The two made for TV movies above were as good if not better than many of the theatrical releases. Claire Danes and Al Pacino in their biographical roles excelled in a year when 3D spectaculars offered little in the way of thought provoking films. As a very late entry (because of my friend Jack’s recommendation) I just saw “Another Year” this weekend.  Not an easy film to watch, but it was well acted and gave me much to think about after the screening.

Included below are my Oscar picks and the lists of Jack Kleinman and Andrew Sarris. Jack is the retiring manager of the Regal Cinemas Santa Cruz 9, and Andrew Sarris is currently published in Film Comment.

Jack Kleinman’s Top Ten for 2010

Here's Jack’s “Top 10” of 2010.  He’s always good for picking selections I may have missed!

  1. Another Year
  2. And Everything Is Going Fine; The Tillman Story; Exit Through the Gift Shop
  3. The Social Network
  4. The Father of My Children
  5. True Grit
  6. Wild Grass
  7. Never Let Me Go
  8. The Fighter
  9. A Prophet
  10.  Shutter Island
  11.  Cairo Time
  12.  Animal Kingdom

Andrew Sarris Top Picks of 2010

Movie Critic appearing in Film Comment

Andrew Sarris  has published in Film Comment Magazine a list of bests for 2010.  Unfortunately this list is all we “Sarrisites” have to go on this year as he is no longer publishing weekly reviews.  At the age of 82, he is still watching and giving us insights based on his knowledge and decades of movie going experience. Here is his 2010 Ten Best List.

  1. The King's Speech
  2. The Kids Are All Right
  3. The Ghost Writer
  4. Winter’s Bone
  5. Inside Job
  6. Toy Story 3
  7. The Fighter
  8. The Company Men
  9. Inspector Bellamy
  10.  The Social Network

Steve Reinhardt’s Picks for the Academy Awards

Now it’s time for my picks to win the Academy Awards on February 27, 2011. These picks were made on February 20, 2011, so I can’t change them at the last minute!  I’ve added a column for those I think “Should Win” (not that they ever do) and a “Did Win” so you can keep score.  As you can see I believe that “Social Network” will do well, but the King’s Speech wins Best Picture and director. My money is on Colin Firth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo.  Everything else is a guess, except I would be surprised if “Toy Story 3” lost for best animation. Historically, my guesses are only about 46% correct, so don’t bet the rent money.
